アメリカで南部 (Old South, the South, American South)と呼ばれているのはアメリカ合衆国の南東部のエリアのこと。南北戦争(1861年〜1865年)の際、アメリカ合衆国から分離し、アメリカ連合国を形成した南部の州を指します。歴史的、地理的な理由から、アメリカの中でも独自の文化を有しています。

The southeastern part of the United States has many names, such as: “The South”, the “Old South”, and/or the “American South”. It consists of several states that once separated from the United States to form the Confederate States of America; during the American Civil War (1861-1865). For historical and geographical reasons, the South has always had a unique culture. 



New Orleans, the largest city in Louisiana, was once ruled by France and Spain, and is known to be the birthplace of jazz. Bourbon Street, in the center of the city, is filled with many jazz bars where good music can be enjoyed all night long.


アメリカ南部はバーベキューの本場。16世紀にスペイン人によって伝わった豚の丸焼きが、アメリカ南部で盛んに食べられるようになり、その後全土へと広がりました。厚めの肉を蓋付きのグリルで、スモークしながらじっくり焼くのが特徴です。 The South is the home of barbecue; Roasted pork, originally introduced by the Spaniards in the 16th century. It became popular in the South and then spread throughout the rest of the country. The thick meat is slowly grilled and smoked using a lid.

Deep South

オールドサウス (Old South) と呼ばれる南北戦争時期の南部の州の中でも、ジョージア州、アラバマ州、ミシシッピ州、ルイジアナ州、サウスカロライナ州はディープサウス(Deep South)と呼ばれ、アメリカ南部の特徴を色濃く持っています。

Among the southern states of the Civil War period: Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and South Carolina are grouped and known as the “Deep South”, they also share similar characteristics within the South of the United States.


Corn Dishes



Corn has always been a staple food in the South of the United States. Some of the Southern essentials include: grits (corn porridge), cornbread, and corn pudding.


Southern Food



The Southern Cuisine features a mix of dishes from various backgrounds such as Britain, France, Africa and Native American cuisine. The ethnic and cultural weight give it the name “soul food”, and the recipes have been passed down for generations. Biscuits and cornbread are combined with meat dishes such as fried chicken and barbecue.cornbread, and corn pudding.

Grits is a specialty dish of the South. Dried corn (mainly white corn) is grounded and boiled into a porridge. It is commonly eaten at breakfast, and is lightly seasoned. Grits can be eaten as is, with butter, cheese, or used as a side dish for larger meals.

Sausage Gravy



A traditional breakfast dish in the South; made by frying sausages and gravy with flour, milk, salt, and pepper. People eat handmade biscuits with plenty of hot sausage gravy.

Peanut Butter



Americans love peanut butter. As a high-quality protein that can be easily obtained, it is indispensable at any American dining table. A common American snack is to have apples and celery with peanut butter. Please give it a try.

Ranch Dressing



Ranch dressing is made by adding herbs and spices to buttermilk and sour cream. It is an essential american sauce that can be sprinkled on salads, but also on fried chicken, fried food, french fries, pizza, etc.

Arnold Parmer



A non-alcoholic cocktail that mixes sweet tea and lemonade. The name comes from the professional golfer Arnold Palmer who loved this drink.

Bourbon is a whiskey made from corn, most likely from the state of Kentucky. If you want to enjoy southern food with alcohol, bourbon is the best choice.

A bread that looks like a scone. Southern Biscuits are characterized by their use of lard, shortening, and buttermilk. British scones were once brought from the north, but then evolved independently into various regional southern biscuits.

Fried Okra



Fried okra is a popular side dish of the South. It has a crispy and exquisite texture. Okra is a common ingredient that can be found in many southern dishes, such as the Cajun's stewed dish, "Gumbo".

Butter Milk




Buttermilk is the liquid that remains after making butter from milk. It has less fat and calories than milk; and is often used for biscuits, fried chicken, and pancakes.

Sweet Tea

南部ならではの飲み物といえば、冷たい紅茶に砂糖をたっぷり入ったとっても甘いスウィートティー。レストラン、ファーストフードでは多くの人が注文します。甘くないアイスティーが飲みたいときはアンスウィートティー (Unsweet Tea)とオーダーする必要があるそうです。


Sweet tea is the most common drink in the South. Made from cold black tea with plenty of sugar. It can be found from restaurants to fast food places. It’s so common that if you want to drink an ordinary ice tea, you need to order an “unsweet tea”.

パイナップルアップサイドダウンケーキ Pineapple upside-down cake



As the name suggests, it’s an upside-down cake. Pineapple is spread on the bottom of the cake, baked, and then turned over when served. Due to the wide spread and popularity of canned pineapples, it has become a popular cake in the United States.

Hot Apple Cider



In Japan, Cider is usually a carbonated drink, but in the United States it’s a drink made from apples. It is often drunk on Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas after apples are harvested. Hot apple cider is brewed with several spices.
